Why Do You Hate
In grade school I asked the white girls and boys
Why do you hate me
In my first marriage I asked
Why do you hate me
Through the divorce and custody battles
Why did you hate me
To my current husband’s ex wife
After she pushed me
Before she even knew me
Because I was willing to love your kids
I asked
Why do you hate me
To my ex husband’s current wife who needed to project her insecurities onto me
Why
Are you jealous of me?
Why do you hate me?
Why
Why is your hatred so great
Why is your fragility so overpowering
You hate me because I’m not you
Because I was never you
Because I carried a light that you couldn’t face
A kindness that was foreign
A soul you couldn’t reach
A stranger you couldn’t meet
